68km Heremence Grimentz - Grand Raid

Happy with the result of the race, the target was to go under 6 hours so 36th place from 297 in class and a time of 5 hours and 57 minutes was good news at the end of an eventful race.

I managed to get a good start with little traffic ahead so made excellent time in the first sector, the second technical section from Mandelon to Evolene was more difficult a small fall did not help but still the time to Evolene was good, I really need to improve in this area. From Evolene to La Vieille I managed a good steady climb maintaining a heart rate of 160 to 164 and completing the climb in 2 hours. The Climb of Pas de Lona proved more of an issue with a loose shoe caused by a broken strap, with my heel loose in the shoe this was the only sector where I could only equal last years time. Trying to forget the loose shoe the last sector was going well until I slid off the path on the way to Grimentz, luckily I only tumbled 3 to 4m metres or so before grabbing a bush with one hand and the bike with the other, to fall any further would have been serious as the path runs along a cliff about 30 metres above the river. Another rider was kind enough to pull my bike up as I climbed back to the path plus a few more cuts and bruises that said the rest of the section including the river crossings went well all the way to the finish, shame as I lost a couple of places and a few minutes. Still room to improve!!

Kublis Swiss Bike Masters 66Km 2600m Elevation

8th in class from 20 finishers 14th Scratch from 41 finishers 4 hours 56 minutes

A really tough race through snow, rain and mud. I was a little slower than last year in the dry but the course was very difficult high up on the single track through the running water, snow, mud and cold. Good climbing and safe descents although I had one fall on a tight gravel turn in the last decent making a small delay but finished 14 scratch and 8 in class. 4 hours 56 minutes.

After a winter of training here in the Valais, entering my third year of cycling and third year of competition and now representing Team Thyon 4 Vallees on a Look Cycle I decided to concentrate this season on mid distance national marathon races, rather than shorter local sprint races. The peak of the season still being our local national the 68km 2950m mid distance Grand Raid in August where a sub 6 hour time will be the target.

A difficult race and season opener in the dry let alone the pouring rain which was on today's menu, finishing was a result in its self.

83rd in class from 160 finishers 3 hours 27 minutes

Dry and fast, steep ups, downs, twists and turns in the fields and forests around Estavayer du Lac. A good performance in my first Elsa Bike Trophy a fast course where gear selection from descents to climbs was important. Also nice that the sun was shining.

Raid Evolenard 28Km 1100m Elevation

5th in class from 37 finishers 1 hour 44 minutes

This week a shorter distance which paid off for me with an excellent finish. A long steady climb punctuated by a technical single track section half way up followed by a fast down hill and a flat heart pounding run to the finish. This course is really worth doing at your leisure to appreciate the stunning scenery.

EKS Goldenrace Bike Marathon 50Km 1250m Elevation

42nd in class from 122 finishers 2 hours 8 minutes

A blindingly fast race along white gravel roads and forest tracks in and around the cornfields and black forest of Northern Switzerland. A little time and momentum lost after a fall on gravel 17km into the race where I lost the fast group I was with but made a good recovery and finished strong with a 4km sprint back into the village of Schleitheim where the heart rate hit 181.
